Beetle of the Week: The Ground Beetle

BB-T31-2012-H

More ground beetles are surfacing and yes I know I already have discussed this type of beetle, but I have decided to go into more detail about them. The Poecilus lucublandus species has a striated elytra that comes off as a dark blue to copper color. These beetles prefer moist cool areas and tend to run rather than fly disturbed. Ground beetles have well-developed mouthparts, but are not known to bite people. Even though their mouthparts are sharp, they are incapable to chewing like most beetles.

This particular beetle was found in Trelease Woods in Urbana, IL.
